1. Why paying in China takes preparation

Mobile payment is important

In China, many daily payments are made with mobile payment apps and QR codes. It is smart to check before departure whether your payment app, card and payment code are ready.

Installing an app is not enough

Installing Alipay is only the first step. You also need an account, you need to link your card and you need to know where to find the payment code and scan function.

Payments can still fail

Mobile payments can fail because of internet problems, verification, limits, bank security blocks or acceptance at a specific location. That is why you always need a backup.

WeChat Pay can be useful as a backup

WeChat Pay can be a second payment route if Alipay does not work or if a merchant mainly uses WeChat.

Cash or a second card can still be useful

China is very mobile-payment focused, but as a fallback, a second card, a small cash backup or help from a travel companion or hotel can reduce stress.

2. What to prepare before departure

1. Install Alipay

Download the official Alipay app before departure and create an account with your phone number.

2. Link your international card

Add your Visa, Mastercard or other supported card in Alipay and complete any required verification.

3. Check your payment code

Open the Pay/Collect code and check whether your linked card is visible as the payment method.

4. Find the scan function

Find where you can scan QR codes, so you do not have to search for it in a shop, restaurant or taxi.

5. Prepare WeChat Pay or another backup payment route

Prepare WeChat Pay, a second card, cash or help from a travel companion or hotel as your backup.

6. Check bank limits and international payments

Check whether your card can be used abroad and whether bank limits or security settings could cause problems.

7. Prepare a payment backup plan

Know what you will do if Alipay, WeChat Pay, card payment or cash does not work.

4. What to do if payment does not work

Step 1. Check your internet

Mobile payment can fail if you do not have a working connection. Check mobile data, Wi-Fi, eSIM or roaming.

Step 2. Try Alipay again

Open your payment code again or try scanning the seller’s QR code.

Step 3. Try your backup

Use WeChat Pay, a second card, cash or help from a travel companion.

Step 4. Ask whether cash or card is possible

Not every location accepts the same payment methods. Ask whether cash, card or another payment route is possible.

Step 5. Ask for help at your hotel or a larger store

Hotels, larger stores or service desks can often help explain which payment option is possible.

Step 6. Call your bank if your card seems blocked

Use the emergency number you have safely saved yourself if your card appears to be blocked.

7. Frequently asked questions

Can I use Alipay in China as a foreign traveler?

Many travelers can use Alipay by linking an international card. Always check the latest conditions in the app and with your card provider.

Is Alipay enough for China?

Alipay is an important payment app, but you should not rely on one payment route. Prepare WeChat Pay, a second card, cash or another backup.

Should I set up WeChat Pay as well?

That is a smart backup. WeChat Pay can be useful if Alipay does not work or if a merchant mainly uses WeChat.

Can I just pay by debit card or credit card?

Some places accept cards, but you should not blindly rely on card payment. Check your card, limits and international payment settings, and prepare mobile payment plus a backup.

Should I bring cash?

A small cash backup can be useful for emergencies, but do not rely only on cash. Prepare mobile payment and a second payment route.

Does Departure Ready store my payment details?

No. Departure Ready does not store card details, bank details, payment codes or payment app login details.

Does Departure Ready guarantee that Alipay or WeChat Pay will work?

No. Apps, card linking, bank limits, verification and acceptance can vary by provider, location and time. Departure Ready helps you prepare and set up backups, but does not guarantee that payment will always work.

Can I go directly to the Alipay check?

This landing page explains paying in China, but the main action always starts the full China checklist. That helps you avoid preparing only Alipay while forgetting internet, backup payments, hotel address or your Safety Pack.

8. Sources

Information based on payment app terms, bank rules, card provider information or official sources can change. Always check the latest conditions yourself with payment apps, banks, card providers and official sources before departure.
