1. eSIM, roaming or local SIM?

eSIM

An eSIM can be useful if your phone supports it and you want to set up mobile data before departure. You usually buy it online, receive setup instructions and activate it according to your provider’s terms.

Works well if you want to:
  • set up mobile data before departure;
  • avoid swapping a physical SIM card;
  • have mobile data soon after arrival;
  • save setup instructions offline.

Watch out Check whether your phone supports eSIM and when your plan’s validity period starts.

Roaming through your provider

Roaming is often the easiest option if your provider has clear China rates or travel bundles. You usually do not need to install a new SIM or eSIM.

Works well if you want to:
  • set up as little as possible;
  • keep using your own number;
  • avoid extra activation steps.

Watch out Check costs, data allowance, coverage and data roaming settings before departure.

Local SIM

A local SIM can be useful if you stay longer or need a local number. It usually requires more setup after arrival, such as visiting a telecom store and showing your passport.

Works well if you:
  • want a local Chinese number;
  • may need a local data plan;
  • are staying longer.

Watch out Do not rely on arranging this after arrival if you need internet immediately for taxi, hotel, translation or payment.

2. Which option should you choose?

Choose eSIM if:
  • your phone supports eSIM;
  • you want to set up mobile data before departure;
  • you mainly need mobile data.
Choose roaming if:
  • your provider has good rates;
  • you want the least setup;
  • you want to keep using your own number.
Choose local SIM if:
  • you stay longer;
  • a local number would be useful;
  • you are willing to arrange it after arrival.

2. Compare eSIM, roaming and local SIM

Look at cost, data allowance, activation, validity period, coverage and how easy it is to get support.

3. Save setup instructions offline

Save your QR code, installation code, activation steps, provider name, order number and support information as screenshots, PDF, in Files or on paper.

4. Check when you should activate

Some plans start at purchase, others at installation or first connection. Check this with your provider.

5. Test whether instructions open without internet

Put your phone briefly in airplane mode and check whether your screenshots, PDFs or setup instructions still open.

7. Frequently asked questions

Is eSIM better than roaming for China?

It depends on your phone, provider, trip length and how much setup you want to do. eSIM can be convenient if your phone supports it and you want to set up mobile data before departure. Roaming can be easier if your provider has clear China rates or travel bundles.

Can I buy a local SIM after arriving in China?

Often yes, but it can take extra time and may require visiting a telecom store and showing identification. Do not rely on a local SIM as your only option if you need internet immediately after arrival.

When should I activate my eSIM?

Check your provider’s terms. Some plans start when you buy them, others when you install them or first connect. Save the activation instructions offline before departure.

Should I save my eSIM instructions offline?

Yes. Save QR codes, installation steps, order number and support information somewhere you can open without internet.

Does eSIM automatically make every app work in China?

No. eSIM only gives you mobile data. Some apps or websites may still be limited or unreliable. Prepare VPN, offline tools and backups as needed.

Does Departure Ready store my eSIM QR code?

No. Departure Ready does not store eSIM QR codes, provider logins or installation files. You save those yourself on your device, for example as screenshots, PDFs, Files or printouts.

8. Sources

Information based on official sources, device support or provider terms can change. Always check the latest terms with your phone manufacturer, mobile provider, eSIM provider and official travel sources.
